Raigad Pictures: Chhatrapati Shivaji's Fort and Maratha Kingdom's CapitalRaigad Fort has a historical significance in India and Maharashtra. Also known as capital of Swarajya(Freedom), this fort was the capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, one of the great heros of India.Shivaji Maharaj,Founder and King of the Maratha Empire, fought against various rulers to defend freedom in the 17th Century. He chose rairi fort as his capital and renamed it to Raigad. Raigad fort (also known as Raigarh or Kille Raigad) lies in the western mountain range of India called the Sahyadris. Due to its strategic location and strong constuction this was a fort from where shivaji could safely rule his empire. This well preserved fort has many things to see and is an architecture's paradise. It has well engineered structures, artistic monuments, palaces and From this fort one can see other grand forts like Rajgad, Torna and Pratapgad To reach this fort one can use the Raigad Ropeway which takes 5 mins to reach to top of fort or climb the 1500 steps. Raigad lies near Paachad village which is 20 kms away from Mahad. MTDC (Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation) has staying facilities on top opf the fort.
