The pic on this page is taken at Pune, India on last day of Ganpati/Ganesha visarjan, which is one of the largest public hindu festival celebrated between 1 to 10 days.
The festive atmosphere in pune is truly electrical and one can see long queues and people visiting different mandals (organisations) to see various idols and amazing decoration and lighting extravaganza. On the last day all the ganpati's follow the same route for a visarjan (immersion) in a grand show of music, sounds, lights and colors.
Ganpati is the elephant mythological hindu god with elephant head. Freedom Fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak started this festival to unite people, for freedom against british empire which was ruling india in 1893.
Today this festival is used as a medium for Social and Public awareness. Ganpati festival 2007 starts on 15th September.
